The Historic Wray Home

113 Chester Street

Glen White, WV 25849

Listed at only $151,000.00

One of the best examples of American Craftsman architecture in southern West Virginia, the historic Wray Home was built in 1910 at Glen White for Everette Wray, the chief accountant for influential coal baron E.E. White. The founder of the E.E. White Coal Company, White, who commissioned the home to be built for the Wrays, lived in the colonnaded mansion that stands on the adjacent knoll. The village of Glen White was named for him. A landmark example of the Arts-and-Crafts movement in American architecture, the home is exquisitely built with craftsmanship in mind. A slate roof, tapered columns, and outstanding attention to carpentry are ha

The property remained in the good care of the Wray family for almost 100 years until it was purchased by its current owners and restored and enhanced. A kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and breakfast room were carefully added. Plumbing, wiring, and HVAC systems were wholly upgraded. A large greenspace in front of the house was acquired to help preserve and protect the property’s historic atmosphere.

In addition to the home’s historic character, location is a particular advantage here. Homeowners benefit from rural quiet as well as easy access to nearby Beckley, the commercial center of southern West Virginia, a drive of approximately 15 minutes away. Convenient retail centers are also located at Sophia and MacArthur, a drive of only five and 10 minutes respectively.

The home also provides for excellent access to outdoor recreation amenities and is fewer than five minutes from the Coalfields Expressway, the final section of which is nearing completion and is expected to boost tourism throughout the region. Hiking, biking, hunting, kayaking, and ATV touring are already growing increasingly popular in the area. Six miles to the southwest of Glen White, Burning Rock Off-Road Park continues to expand to meet the demand for ATV touring and outdoor recreation. Winterplace ski area and Twin Falls Resort State Park are a drive of only 20 minutes away, and the New River Gorge National River is only 30 minutes away.
